Oct 15: Reel World – Across the Line

Synopsis:

Mattie Slaughter is a black teenager poised for hockey greatness. About to be considered for the NHL, Mattie is under extra pressure from his agent to keep his reputation clean. But when race riots erupt at his school and his brother’s criminal life inches closer to home, Mattie’s reputation – and hockey dreams – are at risk.  Inspired by the 1989 Cole Harbour District High School race riots, Across the Line explores racial tensions in North Preston, Nova Scotia. Equal parts beautiful and unsettling, the film sheds critical light on racism in Canada and the struggle to find one’s identity in a society eager to define.
